Every winter, an igloo-building contest takes place in the Ripollès region of the Pyrenees in Catalonia. Experts and amateurs get together very early to start digging and slicing the ice and most of them are done with their constructions by early noon.
It is organized by a local group called Ohmamiglu, and is just a few kilometers away from the popular La Molina ski resort. 2017’s was the 21st edition of this young tradition, and gathered about 150 people, including many families with kids.
The location might change from year to year, but it is usually around a flat, heavily snowed piece of land halfway between the valley of Ribes and the valley of Alp that offers great views over both, with a number of mountain ranges in the background.
Pro builders come prepared with all sorts of tools, and their creations are really cool. Others without that much experience do their best to prevent their ice homes from caving in. All in all, a really fun morning in the snow!
